Going east, a local store/Post Office/tearoom and hotel/pub/restaurant can be found about 2.5 miles away in Lagg/Kilmory.

Blackwaterfoot to the west offers bike hire, golf, tennis, fishing, horse riding, with swimming, squash, and a sauna available at the Kinloch hotel. There are beaches nearby at Sliddery, Cleats Shore, Kilmory and Blackwaterfoot all with sand and rock pools.

Three alternative routes lead to Whin cottage, all scenic. The coastal route winds round the south east of the island, the "String Road" takes you over the centre of the island from east to west while the single-track road known as the “Ross” crosses the southern hills.
